The ZL4KF location (QTH) is in the south of the South Island of New Zealand in a small town called Waikouaiti, about 40 km north east of the city of Dunedin on the South Pacific coast. On Google Earth you can Fly to: -45.608316 170.678348
It’s just a few minutes walk south across a park to the very nice Waikouaiti Beach. The beach is very safe and quite sheltered and ships can often be seen as they approach and leave Port Chalmers to the south at Dunedin. There are many fishing boats, both commercial and recreational which can also often be seen off the coast. Across the street in the other direction to the north is the Hawksbury Lagoon, a wildlife reserve. Our street is very quiet with no through traffic and our neighbours are mainly older people. There are many holiday homes in the street which are only used from time to time.
The climate at the ZL4KF location is a big improvement on the previous one near Gore. We are sheltered by ranges of hills between us and the prevailing southern New Zealand south westerlies and although we do get coastal cloud it’s not as cloudy as coastal areas to the south and north. Sunny Central Otago is only a short distance away and a few minutes drive inland and one starts to notice the clear skies and more continental climate of the central region. There is quite a bit of “spill-over” of this continental climate and so we do get many typically fine Central Otago days but modified by the proximity of the sea. We have been here since June 2011 and are very impressed by the fine days with little or no wind.
Waikouaiti has a population of about 1200 and is part of Dunedin City. It’s a 35 minute drive to the city on quite a scenic highway and so we are not far from all the shopping and services of a city but still living in a quiet and peaceful small town. Here we have a dairy, medical centre, library, museum, automotive garages, transport companies and school so most of our immediate needs can be taken care of locally. A trip to Dunedin once a week or so takes care of groceries and other shopping, banking and so forth. It’s a nice mix of small town life and city facilities.
